chromium

Chromium Overview

Chromium [...] was proposed to be an essential element for mammals ∼60 y ago; however, in the last 2 decades its status has been questioned. Chromium has been postulated to be involved in regulating carbohydrate and lipid (and potentially also protein) metabolism by enhancing insulin's efficacy. However, in 2014, the European Food Safety Authority found no convincing evidence that chromium is an essential element.[1]

Several studies have now demonstrated that chromium supplements enhance the metabolic action of insulin and lower some of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease, particularly in overweight individuals. Chromium picolinate, specifically, has been shown to reduce insulin resistance and to help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Dietary chromium is poorly absorbed.[2]

But, studies are inconsistent. Very little is known about this (essential?) mineral.
