Amylase

Amylase is an enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates, specifically starch and glycogen, into simpler sugars such as glucose. It is found in several places in the human body, including the salivary glands, pancreas, and small intestine.

In the mouth, amylase begins the process of digestion by breaking down carbohydrates into smaller sugars that can be more easily absorbed by the body. In the pancreas and small intestine, amylase continues this process, further breaking down carbohydrates into simpler sugars that can be absorbed into the bloodstream and used as a source of energy.

Amylase is an important enzyme in the human body and is necessary for the proper digestion and utilization of carbohydrates. Deficiencies in amylase can lead to digestive problems, including malabsorption and malnutrition. Additionally, some medical conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, can affect the production of amylase, leading to digestive issues.
